Wzgórza Kunowskie

Wzgórza Kunowskie is a Special Area of Conservation designated under the European Natura 2000 network, situated in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship of south-central Poland. The site covers roughly 1,869 hectares and is recognized at the European level for the diversity and quality of its habitat types rather than for any single iconic species. The protected area stands out for combining several rarely co-occurring habitat complexes within a relatively compact footprint. Inland dunes with sand grasslands sit alongside xerothermic dry grasslands, floodplain and riparian forests, old river arms, and traditionally managed hay meadows, producing a layered landscape shaped by both sandy substrate and riverine moisture. Ecologically, the area functions as a refuge for habitat types that have become scarce across much of Central Europe due to agricultural intensification, abandonment of traditional land use, and river regulation. Its inclusion in the Natura 2000 network reflects an effort to preserve the structural and species diversity that arises when dry sandy slopes and wet valley corridors are conserved together.
