Yookamurra Sanctuary

Yookamurra Sanctuary is a privately protected conservation reserve of roughly 50 square kilometres in the Murraylands region of South Australia. It sits between the eastern slopes of the Mount Lofty Ranges and the Murray River, north-east of the small town of Sedan, occupying a transitional landscape where the southern fringe of Australia's semi-arid zone meets the mallee-dominated country of the Murray-Darling fringe. The reserve is owned and managed by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy and is classified as an IUCN Category IV habitat and species management area. Its gently undulating terrain, shallow calcrete soils, and low open annual rainfall shape a landscape dominated by mallee woodlands and shrublands, making it a significant refuge for mammals and ground-dwelling birds that have declined across much of the surrounding wheatlands and pastoral country. Yookamurra is best understood as a private conservation island in an otherwise heavily modified agricultural landscape, where reintroduction programs and feral animal control are used to maintain populations of threatened native species.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
