Zeppelinhalde

Zeppelinhalde is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the Landkreis Südwestpfalz in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It sits on the eastern slopes of the Kuhnenkopf, west of the village of Nothweiler, near the French border. The protected area covers roughly 14 hectares and consists primarily of a juniper hillside, or Wacholderhalde, a habitat type that has become rare in the region. The reserve was placed under nature protection in 1942, making it one of the older small-scale protected areas in the southern Palatinate. Its landscape opens down from the wooded ridges toward agricultural meadows around Nothweiler, and is framed on the west by a saddle between the Schlossberg, crowned by the Wegelnburg, and the Kuhnenkopf. To the northwest, the reserve directly adjoins the Brauntal and Königsbruch nature reserves, forming a chain of protected hillside habitats along the Palatinate border with Alsace. Zeppelinhalde is primarily valued for the conservation of its juniper-dominated dry grassland, a habitat associated with warm, sun-exposed slopes, light woodland margins, and a distinctive mix of low shrubs and open ground. The presence of the long-distance Staudernheim to Soultz-sous-Forêts trail running through the reserve also gives it recreational and connectivity significance.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
