Mississippi Lake Migratory Bird Sanctuary

The Mississippi Lake Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a small, federally protected waterfowl reserve in eastern Ontario, Canada. Established in 1959, it covers a modest footprint along the southwestern shore of Mississippi Lake, where the Mississippi River enters the basin. The sanctuary is recognized primarily as an important autumn staging area for migratory ducks traveling along North American flyways. Its core is the bay and wetland complex known as Ewan Bay, which is also identified as a provincially significant wetland within Ontario. The site functions less as a wilderness destination and more as a focused conservation refuge, buffered from most public use during the most sensitive months of the fall migration. The reserve is administered by the Canadian Wildlife Service and overlaps substantially with the later Mississippi Lake National Wildlife Area, a complementary habitat and species management designation. Together the two designations reinforce the protection of shallow-water feeding habitat, shoreline cover, and adjacent marsh, all of which are critical to waterfowl preparing for the southern leg of their annual migration.
