Auckland Islands Marine Mammal Sanctuary

The Auckland Islands Marine Mammal Sanctuary is a New Zealand marine protected area that encircles the subantarctic Auckland Islands in the southern Pacific Ocean, roughly 460 kilometers south of the South Island. Established in 1993, it was the second marine mammal sanctuary created within New Zealand waters and covers approximately 560,000 hectares of ocean extending out to a 12 nautical mile radius around the island group. The sanctuary was created primarily to support the recovery of the New Zealand sea lion and the southern right whale, both of which use the sheltered waters around the Auckland Islands as critical habitat. Today the area is recognized for its near-pristine subantarctic marine environment, with deep waters reaching 3,000 meters, rich feeding grounds, and seasonal birthing areas that are central to the resilience of these protected mammal populations. The site forms part of the broader New Zealand Subantarctic Islands UNESCO World Heritage area and is closely associated with the adjacent Auckland Islands-Motu Maha Marine Reserve, which added complementary full marine reserve protections in 2003.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
