Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh National Park is a premier wildlife conservation area located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, central India. The park spans approximately 1,536 square kilometers as part of a larger tiger reserve, with a core national park area of 105 square kilometers declared in 1968. The reserve was established as a Tiger Reserve in 1993, recognizing its exceptional significance for tiger conservation. Bandhavgarh derives its name from the historic Bandhavgarh Fort, with 'Bandhav' meaning brother in Sanskrit, reportedly given by Lord Rama to his brother Lakshmana to monitor Lanka. The park features a predominantly rugged and hilly terrain covered by moist deciduous forests, sal trees, and dense bamboo thickets. It is renowned for having one of the highest densities of tigers in India and supports a rich diversity of other wildlife including leopards, gaur, sambar deer, and numerous bird species. The area was historically the hunting ground of the princely state of Rewa, adding royal heritage to its natural significance.
