Basilan Natural Biotic Area

Basilan Natural Biotic Area is a protected natural area on Basilan Island in the southern Philippines, established by Presidential Proclamation No. 321 on May 31, 2000. The reserve sits in mountainous terrain that rises above 1,000 meters within the island's interior, spanning the municipal territories of Lamitan City, Sumisip, Tipo-Tipo, and Isabela City. The area combines a core zone of roughly 4,497 hectares with a surrounding buffer zone of about 2,019 hectares. Its vegetation is a mix of small remaining patches of primary lowland and montane rainforest around Mount Mohadji together with extensive secondary rainforest that has regrown across former disturbance areas, creating contiguous habitat for forest-dependent wildlife. The reserve is best understood as one of the key forest refuges for birds and other forest species in the Zamboanga Peninsula region. It shelters several endemic and restricted-range bird subspecies found only on Basilan and neighboring parts of Mindanao, giving it particular significance for avian conservation in the southern Philippines.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
