Natura 2000 Area No. 51 Begtrup Vig and Coastal Areas at Helgenæs

Natura 2000 Area No. 51 is a Danish EU habitat site that combines the sheltered bay of Begtrup Vig with about sixteen kilometers of coastline running along the west and south sides of Helgenæs, a peninsula on the eastern edge of Mols in eastern Jutland. The protected landscape moves between marine shallows, steep coastal cliffs, raised former seabed, dune formations, and open calcareous grasslands, creating one of the more varied coastal habitat mosaics along the Djursland shore. The site is important because it concentrates exceptionally large connected areas of coastal grassland and krumodde, or recurved spit, systems on Danish soil. Combined with coastal heath, lagoon-like inlets, and source-spring habitats, it provides a continuity of coastal and near-coastal nature that is rarely matched in such a compact area. The northern part of the area also overlaps with Nationalpark Mols Bjerge, linking it to one of Denmark's most prominent landscape protection initiatives. Beyond its ecological value, the area reflects the long geological history of the Kattegat coast, where post-glacial land uplift has lifted ancient seabed into dry land and exposed Pleistocene cliff faces. The site is administered within Syddjurs Kommune in Region Midtjylland, and its management is planned through Denmark's Natura 2000 framework, originally adopted in 2011 and continued in later planning periods.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
