Bieszczady National Park
Bieszczady National Park is the third-largest and one of the most ecologically significant national parks in Poland, situated in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship at the country's extreme southeastern border. The park protects the highest terrain of the Polish portion of the Bieszczady Mountains, a subsection of the Eastern Carpathians, and encompasses dramatic alpine landscapes including the towering peak of Tarnica at 1,346 meters above sea level. Approximately 80% of the park is covered by forests, many of which retain a pristine, old-growth character that has persisted through centuries. The park features the distinctive połoniny, a unique Carpathian grassland ecosystem found at higher elevations that sets this region apart from other Polish mountain parks. In 2021, Bieszczady became a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe, recognizing its exceptional conservation value. The park forms part of the East Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, a transboundary protected area spanning Poland, Slovakia, and Ukraine.
