A remote, uninhabited Marshall Islands atoll whose isolation has preserved one of the Pacific's most important seabird and green turtle nesting sites.

Bikar Atoll

Bikar Atoll is one of the smallest and most isolated atolls in the Marshall Islands, a remote coral ring in the Ratak Chain of the central North Pacific. It lies hundreds of kilometers from the nearest inhabited island and has no resident human population, a condition that has held for as long as the documented history of the archipelago allows. Because of that persistent isolation, the atoll's vegetation, seabird colonies, and sea turtle nesting beaches have remained in a relatively pristine state compared with more accessible Marshall Islands atolls. A narrow ring of six tiny islets encloses a shallow lagoon of roughly 37 square kilometers. The surrounding reef is almost continuous, with only a single narrow pass, giving the atoll a sheltered interior that functions as a sheltered sea turtle habitat. Bikar's arid climate, low profile, and exposure to tropical cyclones have kept it unsuitable for permanent settlement, and it has long been used only as a seasonal hunting and gathering ground by communities from neighboring atolls such as Utirik. The atoll is internationally significant for its wildlife. It is one of the most important seabird breeding sites in the Marshall Islands, supporting large colonies of frigatebirds, boobies, terns, and tropicbirds, and it is also a major nesting site for the endangered green turtle. Its combination of undisturbed beaches, intact native atoll vegetation, and absence of an established human presence makes Bikar a benchmark site for understanding what a pre-human Micronesian atoll ecosystem once looked like across the wider Pacific.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
