Buchertsgräben bei Schlierbach

Buchertsgräben bei Schlierbach is a small nature reserve in the southern part of the German state of Hesse, situated in the municipality of Schaafheim within the Darmstadt-Dieburg district. It lies on the northern fringes of the Odenwald uplands, in the Kleine Bergstraße landscape area of the Reinheimer Hügelland, and covers roughly 52 hectares of wooded terrain. The reserve protects a richly structured mixed forest that is dissected by several deep loess gullies, creating an unusually varied mosaic of woodland, relict dry grassland, and geological exposures. The protected area was formally designated on 21 January 1986 and is administered under the German federal nature conservation framework, with oversight by the Bundesamt für Naturschutz. Its purpose is to safeguard a landscape-defining forest with its characteristic loess ravines as habitat for rare plant and animal species, while also preserving a geologically significant site at the transition between the Odenwald and the Rhine-Main lowlands. Ecologically, the reserve is most notable for its association with loess-slope forests, its dry-grassland relicts, and the unusually rich orchid flora and butterfly fauna that have survived within a fragment of traditionally used cultural landscape. It stands as a representative example of how small protected areas in the Rhine-Main region can preserve uncommon habitat combinations shaped by geology and historical land use.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
