Caroona Creek Conservation Park

Caroona Creek Conservation Park is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia, situated in the Mid North region between the rounded hills south of the Flinders Ranges and the broader arid country of the Olary Plain. The park straddles the localities of Collinsville and Mount Bryan East, roughly 173 kilometres north-east of Adelaide and about 19 kilometres east of the small town of Hallett. It was proclaimed in 2010 under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 and is managed by the Department for Environment and Water, with land added to its boundaries in 2014. The reserve takes its name from Caroona Creek, a stream that flows within its boundaries, and protects a transitional landscape where steep rocky ridges and calcrete hills give way to alluvial plains. One of its most recognised features is Tourilie Gorge, a rugged area of hills and rocky terrain in the northern part of the park. The park is also crossed by a loop section of the long-distance Heysen Trail, making it a waypoint for walkers moving through the broader Mid North and southern Flinders Ranges environment. Although one of South Australia's smaller conservation parks, Caroona Creek plays an important role in conserving a representative sample of the ecological and landscape transition between the Mid North hills and the rocky gorge country that characterises the southern Flinders Ranges to its north.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
