Charcoal Tank Nature Reserve

The Charcoal Tank Nature Reserve is a small protected nature reserve in the central western region of New South Wales, Australia, situated about ten kilometres south of West Wyalong along the corridor of the Newell Highway. Covering a little over 86 hectares, it sits within an extensively cleared agricultural landscape and functions as one of the few substantial remnants of native vegetation that remain in the area. The reserve is most significant for its conserved stands of mallee and mallee-broombush woodland, a vegetation formation considered critically endangered in New South Wales and now protected in only three places across the state. Despite its modest size and isolation, the reserve supports an unusually rich bird fauna, with documented breeding populations, nomadic visitors, and several threatened species that rely on the surviving mallee and eucalyptus habitat. Because the surrounding countryside has been heavily modified and fragmented, the reserve also serves as a refuge for native plants and animals that have otherwise disappeared from the region. Its combination of scientific value, small-park biodiversity, and connection to the cultural landscape of the Wiradjuri people makes it a meaningful, if compact, element of New South Wales's protected-area network.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
