Cook Island Nature Reserve

Cook Island Nature Reserve is a small protected area on the eastern coast of Australia, located on Cook Island about 600 metres off the headland of Fingal Head and roughly four kilometres south-east of Tweed Heads in far northern New South Wales. It covers the full extent of the island down to the mean high water mark, an area of only about five hectares, making it one of the more compact nature reserves in the New South Wales system. The reserve is significant for its role as a breeding ground for seabirds and for the relatively undisturbed native vegetation that covers the island. Closed scrub provides shelter for nesting birds, and the surrounding waters are protected as a separate aquatic reserve, creating a combined land-and-sea conservation area of high ecological value. Classified as an IUCN Category Ia strict nature reserve, Cook Island Nature Reserve is managed with a strong conservation focus rather than for public recreation, and its remote setting has helped preserve its natural condition. Its importance is recognised both for migratory bird habitat and for the broader integrity of the northern New South Wales coastal environment.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
