Dorset Heaths

The Dorset Heaths form an important lowland heathland region in southern England, occupying a large part of the Poole Basin between the chalk landscapes that border it. Recognized by Natural England as National Character Area 135, the area is defined by undulating terrain where heather, pines, and gorse alternate with open farmland, scattered woodland, scrub, and extensive conifer blocks. Much of the landscape is protected through a dense network of international and national conservation designations, including Ramsar wetlands, Special Protection Areas, Special Areas of Conservation, and National Nature Reserves. Beyond its ecological value, the Dorset Heaths carry strong regional identity. They frame the Poole, Bournemouth, and Christchurch conurbation, enclose harbours and river valleys, and create the transition between the sandy heaths of the east and the chalk downland that surrounds much of Dorset. The combination of open heath, valley mires, coastal dunes, and harbour habitats gives the area a distinctive character compared with neighbouring natural regions of southern England. The region holds particular importance for wetland and heathland conservation in the United Kingdom, supporting rare habitats that have been seriously reduced elsewhere in lowland England. Its mosaic of dry and wet heath, mire, woodland, and estuarine environments makes it one of the most significant concentrations of protected heathland in the country.
