Forêt classée de Niégré

The Forêt classée de Niégré is one of the large classified forest blocks of southwestern Ivory Coast, lying between the Gbôklè and Nawa regions near Sassandra, Soubré, and Guéyo. Designated as a state forest reserve by colonial decree in 1937, it was originally intended to safeguard a major tract of Guinean moist evergreen forest along the wet coastal hinterland. Today the massif is widely cited as an example of an Ivorian protected forest that has lost most of its ecological substance, since decades of informal logging and above all the spread of cocoa and coffee smallholdings inside its boundaries have converted much of the original canopy. The forest sits within the sub-equatorial climatic belt of the southwestern Ivorian littoral, with annual rainfall historically in the range of roughly 1,000 to 2,000 mm distributed across two wet and two dry seasons. In phytogeographic terms it belongs to the dense humid Guinean forest domain, at the transition between ombrophile forest closer to the coast and mesophile forest further inland. Its contemporary importance lies less in intact wilderness than in the long-running tension between agriculture, rural settlement, and attempts to restore forest cover. The site became nationally visible in 2013 when SODEFOR and the Ivorian army conducted a large eviction operation inside the forest, drawing international scrutiny over how Côte d'Ivoire's classified forests are managed.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
