Fossil Ridge Wilderness

Fossil Ridge Wilderness is a U.S. Wilderness Area set in the high country of west-central Colorado, in the Gunnison basin northeast of the town of Gunnison. The wilderness lies within the Gunnison National Forest and centers on a prominent, exposed ridge of Paleozoic carbonate rock that preserves fossils from ancient shallow, inland seas. The landscape is mountainous and arid, with elevations rising from forested creek valleys near 8,880 feet to alpine summits above 13,000 feet. Although relatively small at roughly 13,000 acres, the area combines striking geological features with classic Rocky Mountain wilderness character, including open ridge tops, subalpine forests, and high basins. Its defining identity is the unusual concentration of marine fossils embedded in its古老的 carbonate ridges, set against a backdrop shaped by uplift and erosion. The wilderness is administered by the U.S. Forest Service and is recognized as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
