Grass Tree Conservation Park

Grass Tree Conservation Park is a small protected area in the southeast of South Australia, situated in the Limestone Coast region about 17 kilometres north of Naracoorte. The reserve was established specifically to protect a stand of grass trees, the iconic Australian plant that gives the park both its name and its reason for existing. Covering only 16 hectares of sandy, dune-influenced land near the West Naracoorte Range, it is one of many modest conservation parks that together form an important network of native vegetation protection across South Australia. The park lies on unaltered crown land that was never cleared for agriculture, although historical grazing by domestic livestock has left traces in the understorey. Its vegetation reflects the broader Limestone Coast environment, with brown stringybark low woodland on the deeper sands, pink gum open forest on a stony limestone rise in the central area, and a smaller patch of South Australian blue gum forest in the south-east, all carrying a distinctive understorey dominated by grass trees, bracken, and other native species. As a gazetted protected area managed under South Australia's National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972, Grass Tree Conservation Park is classified as an IUCN Category III natural monument or feature. It receives very little visitor use and offers no formal facilities beyond boundary access tracks, functioning primarily as a conservation reserve rather than a recreational destination.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
