Great Sandhills National Wildlife Area

The Great Sandhills National Wildlife Area is a small Canadian protected area located in southwest Saskatchewan, in the Rural Municipality of Happyland No. 231, southeast of the town of Leader. Established on March 12, 2025, it covers roughly 475 hectares of a landscape dominated by the Great Sandhills, one of the largest active dune fields in the province. The wildlife area was created as part of a broader reorganization of Canada's prairie national wildlife areas, replacing portions of the older Prairie National Wildlife Area that no longer met modern conservation criteria. It safeguards cultivated prairie, native mixed grassland, alkaline wetlands, and stabilized sand dunes, representing a combination of working prairie landscape and uncommon dune ecology in a region where native prairie is among the most threatened ecosystems on Earth. Although small in size, the area plays a meaningful role in the conservation of native prairie biodiversity in southern Saskatchewan. It supports a range of grassland birds, mammalian prairie fauna, and reptile and amphibian species characteristic of the Canadian mixed grass plains, while also protecting a portion of the iconic dune and alkaline wetland mosaic that defines the Great Sandhills.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
