Hannah Bay Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Hannah Bay Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a federally protected area in Canada that straddles the boundary between Ontario and Nunavut along the southern coast of James Bay. The sanctuary covers a section of the Ministikawatin Peninsula, beginning at the Ontario, Quebec border and extending westward to the shores of James Bay. The protected landscape is dominated by extensive intertidal mudflats and sedge marshes, two habitat types that draw enormous concentrations of migratory waterfowl each autumn. The sanctuary was established in 1939 and has been administered by the Canadian Wildlife Service ever since. In 1987 it was incorporated into the Southern James Bay Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, recognising its role on the global stage of wetland conservation. This sanctuary belongs to Canada's national network of Migratory Bird Sanctuaries, a system designed to safeguard essential stopover and staging habitat for species that depend on the Hudson Bay, James Bay, and Atlantic flyways. It remains one of the more remote and ecologically significant bird sanctuaries in the country, defined less by iconic scenery than by its sheer biological productivity during the fall migration.
