Île du Portage National Wildlife Area

Île du Portage National Wildlife Area is a small uninhabited island reserve located in the mouth of the Miramichi River, on the Northumberland Strait side of New Brunswick, Canada. Designated as a National Wildlife Area in 1979, it is administered by the Canadian Wildlife Service and forms part of the limited network of National Wildlife Areas in the province, one of only five recognized in New Brunswick. The protected island sits within a dynamic coastal and estuarine environment where the freshwater Miramichi system meets the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Its position at the river mouth gives it ecological importance for coastal birdlife, marine influences, and shoreline habitat, even though the island itself has no permanent human population. Beyond its conservation role, the island carries regional heritage, notably through its historic lighthouse, whose replica is displayed inland at the New Brunswick Aquarium and Marine Centre in Shippagan. The area combines ecological protection with maritime cultural memory, anchoring both natural and human history along the province's northeastern coast.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
