Juan Castro Blanco National Park

Juan Castro Blanco National Park is a protected area in northern Costa Rica, established in 1992 as part of the Arenal Huetar Norte Conservation Area. The park covers approximately 145 square kilometers of tropical forest landscapes in the highlands of Alajuela Province, situated about 100 kilometers north of the capital city of San José. The park is distinguished by its volcanic character, encompassing three volcanoes: the active Platanar Volcano, the dormant Porvenir Volcano, and the inactive El Viejo Volcano. These volcanic formations create a dramatic landscape of forested slopes, mountain peaks, and the headwaters of multiple river systems that originate within the reserve. The combination of high elevation, volcanic soils, and moisture-laden trade winds has produced diverse ecosystems including both tropical rainforest and cloud forest, supporting remarkable biodiversity within a relatively compact protected area.
