Kellerwald-Edersee National Park

Kellerwald-Edersee National Park is a protected area in northern Hesse, Germany, situated in the Kellerwald low mountain range directly south of the Edersee, one of Germany's largest reservoir lakes. The park was established on 1 January 2004 and covers approximately 57 square kilometers of forested hill country characterized by rolling hills, deep valleys, and granite rock formations. Its defining feature is the extensive coverage of European beech forests, which represent some of the most natural and oldest beech woodland in Central Europe. Since June 2011, significant portions of the park's beech forests have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the transnational inscription "Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe," acknowledging the park's exceptional ecological value in documenting the post-glacial spread and evolution of beech forests across Europe. The park is administered from the town of Bad Wildungen and remains one of Germany's younger national parks, yet it has quickly gained recognition for its conservation significance and visitor infrastructure.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
