Kysing Fjord

Kysing Fjord is a small Natura 2000 protected area on the eastern coast of Jutland in central Denmark, administered across Odder Municipality and Aarhus Municipality in the Region Midtjylland. The protected site centers on the approximately three kilometer long, very shallow Norsminde Fjord, a coastal lagoon whose water level and salinity are controlled by a tidal sluice at the village of Norsminde. The surrounding landscape includes reclaimed former fjord bed now used for agriculture and the lower meadows along Odder Å as it reaches the sea. The area has functioned as a wildlife reserve since 1942 and was designated as a Danish EU Bird Protection Area primarily because it provides important wintering and resting habitat for waterbirds, especially the whooper swan. Even though parts of the original Kysing Fjord were reclaimed long ago for farmland, the surviving lagoon still functions as one of the most significant coastal lagoon systems in the historic Aarhus County region. Today Kysing Fjord represents a compact but ecologically meaningful example of Danish coastal lagoon conservation, where regulated water management, agricultural use of reclaimed land, and EU-level species protection overlap within a single small protected landscape.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.
