Leinawald

The Leinawald is a protected forest landscape in the Altenburger Land of eastern Thuringia, Germany, classified as a nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) and a European bird protection area. Covering roughly 1,840 hectares, it stretches across the low, hilly terrain between the villages of Klausa, Langenleuba-Niederhain, and Altmörbitz, and borders the Schömbach reservoir on its eastern edge, with the Saxon state boundary along its northern side. Although today mostly clad in spruce and pine, the Leinawald is ecologically richer than its planted cover suggests. The underlying potential natural vegetation includes beech forest, oak-hornbeam woodland, and alder swamp forest on loess-covered, moist, and periodically wet soils. Numerous ponds, brook valleys, wet woodland pockets, and old quarry or sand-pit sites create a mosaic of habitats that supports amphibians, woodland birds, deer, and wild boar. The forest carries a layered human history. It was once a ducal hunting ground under Saxe-Altenburg, and its cartographic grid of quadrants dates back to early modern forestry. The area also bears heavy 20th-century traces: the former military airfield at Klausa, a wartime prisoner-of-war and forced labor camp linked to the HASAG armaments firm, and an associated mass grave whose victims were reburied in Nobitz in 2013. Today the Leinawald is managed by ThüringenForst and protected under both German nature reserve law and European Natura 2000 designations.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
