Luengue-Luiana National Park
Luengue-Luiana National Park is a sprawling protected area in the southeastern corner of Angola, covering approximately 42,000 square kilometers in Cuando Province. Established in 2011, it forms part of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area, a massive transboundary initiative linking protected areas across Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The park encompasses diverse habitats including open woodland dominated by Burkea, Baikiaea, Pterocarpus, and Erythrophleum trees, as well as extensive floodplains along the Cuando River where grasslands stretch 10 to 15 kilometers wide. The landscape is bounded by the Kavango River to the west and southwest, the Cuando River marking the Zambian border to the east, and shares its northern boundary with Longa-Mavinga National Park. This vast protected area represents one of Angola's most significant conservation landscapes, providing crucial habitat for populations of African bush elephant, black rhinoceros, giraffe, and numerous other large mammal species.
