Mountain Lakes Wilderness

Mountain Lakes Wilderness is a federally protected wilderness area in Klamath County, Oregon, set within the southern Cascade Range. It lies inside the Fremont–Winema National Forest and is administered by the U.S. Forest Service. The wilderness surrounds a cluster of four overlapping shield volcanoes, with Aspen Butte rising as the highest peak, and encompasses a network of more than twenty small lakes set in glacial cirques near the volcanic summits. The area is notable for its unusual geometry: Mountain Lakes Wilderness is the only U.S. wilderness area whose borders form an exact square, matching a single survey township. This distinctive boundary reflects its administrative origin and gives the protected area a cleanly defined footprint on the landscape. Visitors come to Mountain Lakes for its combination of volcanic scenery, alpine lake basins, and relative quiet compared with more heavily traveled Cascade destinations. Hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, and fishing are the main activities, supported by a small network of trails that reach the lakes, ridges, and high country shaped by ancient glacial activity.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
