The Gauligletscher Nature Reserve sits in the southeastern Bernese Oberland, in the southernmost side valley of Innertkirchen. Its setting is one of the most remote and geologically expressive landscapes in the canton of Bern, defined by a deep, U-shaped glacial amphitheater surrounded by jagged peaks of the northern Aarmassiv. The valley opens toward the hamlet of Innertkirchen along the upper reaches of the Ürbachwasser, whose course, falls, and pools structure the lower portion of the reserve.

Geologically, the protected area lies within a varied zone at the northern edge of the Aarmassiv, where ancient basement rocks were uplifted and folded during the Alpine orogeny.
