Gauligletscher Nature Reserve

The Gauligletscher Nature Reserve is a high-alpine glacier and river landscape in the eastern Bernese Oberland, in the Swiss canton of Bern. It encompasses the forelands of four receding glaciers, including the Gauligletscher itself, which together once filled the upper Urbachtal. Designated in 2001, the reserve is the largest protected floodplain in the canton of Bern and the third-largest glacier foreland protected area in Switzerland. The site functions as a dynamic natural laboratory where ice retreat, slope erosion, river reshaping, and plant colonization can be observed within the same landscape. Glacial lakes such as the Gaulisee have formed from melting ice, while the surrounding terrain carries abundant moraines, talus cones, and fluvial deposits. The reserve lies within the broader Landscape Protection Area of Innertkirchen in the southernmost valley of the municipality. Beyond its ecological role, the Gauligletscher reserve illustrates the rapid pace of alpine landscape change in the 21st century. Parts of the original 2001 perimeter have already been left ice-free, and new sections of deglaciated terrain now lie outside the protected boundary, signaling that the high-alpine environment continues to evolve beyond the reserve's original footprint.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
