Naturschutzgebitt Aarnescht

Naturschutzgebitt Aarnescht is a protected nature reserve in central-eastern Luxembourg, within the commune of Niederanven. It lies on a sun-exposed slope northeast of the village of Oberanven and is one of the earliest nature reserves designated in Luxembourg. The reserve protects around 75 hectares of calcareous dry grassland, known as Halbtrockenrasen, set within a larger buffer zone of about 27 hectares. Its limestone- and clay-rich, nutrient-poor soils support an unusually rich array of plant and animal life. The site is closely associated with the botanist Léopold Reichling, whose research in the 1970s laid the groundwork for its formal protection. Aarnescht is best known for its orchids, but the wider landscape also includes traditional orchards, oak low-forest, beech, and pine stands, as well as pipe-grass wet meadows along erosion gullies. A nature trail with around sixteen information panels was developed through the reserve in 2003 to interpret its habitats, history, and cultural landscape character.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
