Ñembi Guasu Conservation and Ecological Importance Area

Ñembi Guasu is a large conservation and ecological importance area in southeastern Bolivia, located within the Bolivian Chaco in the Santa Cruz department. Created in 2019 under the autonomous governance of the Guaraní Indigenous territory of Charagua Iyambae, it is one of the largest protected areas in Bolivia and forms part of a continuous dry-forest landscape that also includes the Otuquis and Kaa Iya protected areas. The area protects an extensive swath of Chaco dry forest, one of the most extensive dry tropical forest ecosystems in the world, and spans a physiographic gradient from the sub-Andean fringe through a transitional piedmont into the open Chaco plain. Beyond its ecological role, Ñembi Guasu is recognized for its cultural and territorial significance: it overlaps with the ancestral lands of the Ayoreo people, including communities that still live in voluntary isolation. Its scale, ecological connectivity with neighboring reserves, and Indigenous-led protection framework make Ñembi Guasu a landmark conservation area in lowland South America.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
