Oostvaardersplassen

Oostvaardersplassen is a nature reserve of roughly 5,600 hectares lying between Almere and Lelystad in the province of Flevoland in the Netherlands. It lies in one of the country's newest landscapes, having formed after the drainage of the Flevoland polders between 1950 and 1968, and is therefore an unusually young protected area compared with much older Dutch nature sites. The reserve is divided roughly into a wet marsh section of about 3,600 hectares and a drier grazed section of about 2,000 hectares. The wet section is internationally important as a marsh and as a wintering area for birds, while the drier section is kept open by herds of large grazers such as Heck cattle, Konik horses, and red deer, alongside smaller grazers such as greylag geese. Oostvaardersplassen is recognized for its high ecological value, its pioneering role in large-herbivore management, and its inclusion in the Nationaal Park Nieuw Land. It is also a designated Natura 2000 site and a Bird Directive area, reflecting both its national and European conservation significance.
