The low, sandy, wet areas of Southern Flevoland were originally planned for industry and greenhouse agriculture, but instead became a marsh.
After Southern Flevoland was drained, reeds were sown by plane, willows took hold, and pioneer plants such as marsh sowthistle established on the mudflats, creating a mosaic of reed beds, willow thickets, open water, and marsh vegetation. By the early 1970s the area was rapidly drying out and silting up due to drainage of the surrounding farmland.
