Pituamkek National Park Reserve

Pituamkek National Park Reserve is Canada's newest national park reserve, established in July 2024 along the northern coast of Prince Edward Island. The protected area encompasses a 50-kilometre chain of barrier islands stretching from the Cascumpec Sand Hills in the northwest to the Malpeque Sand Hills in the southeast, with Conway Sand Hills occupying the intermediate stretch. These barrier islands separate Cascumpec and Malpeque Bays from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, forming a natural buffer that protects the island's main shore from severe weather events while creating a rich coastal ecosystem. The park reserve covers approximately 30 square kilometres and represents a landmark achievement in Indigenous-protected area co-management, with the Mi'kmaq of Prince Edward Island serving as co-management partners with Parks Canada. The area holds deep cultural significance, with the Mi'kmaq name Pituamkek meaning "at the long sand dune" and archaeological evidence of continuous Indigenous use spanning at least 4,000 years.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
