Rallenteich von Eppertshausen

The Rallenteich von Eppertshausen is a nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) located in the municipality of Eppertshausen in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district of southern Hesse. Covering roughly 12 hectares, it protects a mosaic landscape that grew out of an abandoned clay quarrying site, where a small standing waterbody and surrounding forest and meadow form a compact but unusually biodiverse habitat complex. At its core, the reserve centers on a partly reed-fringed pond that transitions in places into swamp woodland, flanked by great sedge stands, boggy patches with sphagnum and other mosses, and an acidic oak forest to the west and northwest. The fine-grained mosaic of open water, marsh, woodland, and even a sandy ridge with pine creates an unusually high density of breeding birds, amphibians, and other fauna in a very small area. The site is one of many ecclesiastical and historic clay diggings around Eppertshausen that ceased operation in the late 1940s. After centuries of extraction, the pits filled with water and were colonized by wetland plants, eventually earning formal protection in 1976. Small but targeted conservation measures, including amphibian tunnels installed in 2012 under a nearby road, continue to safeguard the site.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
