Divo Botanical Reserve

The Divo Botanical Reserve is a protected natural area in southern Côte d'Ivoire, located in the Lôh-Djiboua region near the city of Divo. Created in 1935 during the French colonial period, it originally covered an area of semi-sempervirent tropical forest and served as one of the early botanical conservation sites in the country. Today, it represents a landscape of profound ecological contrast: long-established decades of agricultural pressure have reshaped the area, while a structured restoration effort seeks to bring back its forest character. The reserve covers roughly 6,800 hectares between the villages of Blé and Kpacossou-Carrefour, east of Divo, along the route toward Tiassalé. Once a continuous tract of primary tropical forest, it now contains only fragmented patches of secondary forest surrounded by cocoa, oil palm, rubber, and lowland cultivation. Botanical surveys conducted in 2023 documented more than 500 plant species across the reserve, including a number of IUCN-listed timber species of major conservation concern. Its present significance lies in both its ecological heritage and its restoration ambition. Managed by Côte d'Ivoire's Ministry of Waters and Forests, the reserve has become a focal point for international collaboration aimed at reviving forest cover, recovering biodiversity, and demonstrating how degraded West African forest landscapes can be brought back toward ecological resilience by 2030.
