Saucats and La Brède National Geological Nature Reserve

The Saucats and La Brède National Geological Nature Reserve is a French national nature reserve located in the Gironde department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, roughly twenty kilometers south of Bordeaux. Established in 1982, it was the first geological nature reserve created in France and remains one of the most important reference sites in Europe for understanding the early to middle Miocene period. The reserve spans about 75.5 hectares across the communes of Saucats and La Brède, organized into six distinct sites grouped into three geographic sectors within the broader Landes forest landscape. Its core scientific importance lies in the protected outcrops of faluns, which are consolidated shell-bearing marine sands deposited when tropical seas repeatedly invaded the Aquitaine Basin during the Tertiary era. The reserve conserves the stratotypes of the Aquitanian and parts of the Burdigalian stages, international reference sections used by geologists worldwide to define these time intervals. Beyond its geological value, the reserve also shelters riparian habitats along small streams that have cut into the fossil-bearing formations, creating a blend of paleontological heritage and natural environment. The reserve stands out as a hybrid site where the protection of in situ fossil exposures, ongoing scientific research, public education, and biodiversity conservation come together. Managed by a dedicated local association, it serves both as a working reference for stratigraphy and paleontology and as an accessible place for visitors to encounter geology directly in the landscape.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
