Sanctuaire Pelagos

The Sanctuaire Pelagos is a vast maritime area of approximately 87,500 square kilometers in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea, established jointly by France, Monaco, and Italy. Created through an international agreement signed in 1999 and entered into force in 2002, it is the first transboundary marine protected area focused specifically on the conservation of marine mammals in this region of the Mediterranean. Its waters are home to a remarkable diversity of cetaceans, including several species of dolphins and whales that find feeding grounds and migration corridors within the sanctuary's boundaries. The Pelagos Sanctuary is recognized as a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance (ASPIM) and is on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status, highlighting its significance for marine biodiversity and international conservation cooperation. Beyond its ecological role, the sanctuary also serves as a platform for scientific research, monitoring, and experimentation that can inform the management of marine protected areas more broadly across the Mediterranean basin.
