Sint Eustatius National Marine Park

Sint Eustatius National Marine Park is a protected marine area that encircles the Caribbean island of Sint Eustatius, one of the special municipalities of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Established in 1996 under the former Netherlands Antilles, the park covers roughly 27.5 square kilometers of coastal and nearshore waters, extending from the high-water mark out to a depth of about 30 meters and reaching up to three kilometers from shore. The marine park is defined by its volcanic setting. Its coral reefs have grown on the submerged remnants of the island's northern and southern volcanoes, and additional reef communities have developed on historic shipwrecks. Two specially designated marine reserves within the park, the Northern Marine Reserve and the Southern Marine Reserve, together protect around 4.9 square kilometers where fishing and anchoring are prohibited. Beyond its reef ecosystems, the park supports seasonal populations of migrating cetaceans including dolphins and humpback whales between January and April, and it serves as a critical nesting habitat for several species of sea turtle. Managed by the St Eustatius National Parks Foundation (STENAPA), the marine park is closely linked to the island's terrestrial protected areas, particularly the Quill/Boven National Park, forming a connected network of conservation zones.
