Sněženky ve Vysokém lese

Sněženky ve Vysokém lese is a small natural monument in the eastern Bohemian region of the Czech Republic, set in a forested landscape southwest of the village of Chmelík and southeast of Polička in the Svitavy district. The reserve protects a section of the so-called Snowdrop Valley (Sněženkové údolí), a moist forested hollow where wild common snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) carpet former meadows every spring. Despite covering only about 2 hectares, the site is of considerable botanical importance as a stronghold for this early-flowering species in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. The protected area is situated within a larger spruce-dominated woodland known as Vysoký les, through which two parallel valleys run from north to south. The natural monument occupies the western of these two valleys, between the northern edge of the forest and the historic Demelova chapel. The combination of damp ground, former meadow clearings scattered with ash and sycamore, and the surrounding spruce forest creates the particular microclimate that allows the snowdrops to thrive in such density. Declared a protected site on 1 September 1994 by the former District Office in Svitavy, the area is now administered by the Pardubice Regional Authority and is recognised internationally within IUCN Category IV as a habitat and species management area. Its value lies less in dramatic scenery and more in its quiet conservation role, preserving a striking seasonal display of snowdrops in a region otherwise dominated by conifer plantations.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
