Speyerer Auwald

The Speyerer Auwald is a stretch of floodplain forest on the municipal territory of Speyer on the Upper Rhine, in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It lies between the main Rhine embankment and the river, and also extends west of the embankment along the Berghäuser Altrhein and its former oxbow Runkedebunk before that arm rejoins the Rhine. The forest represents a classic Upper Rhine alluvial landscape, combining softwood floodplains dominated by willows and poplars with hardwood floodplains of ash, oak, maple, and field elm. Abutting backwaters and alluvial meadows enrich the habitat mosaic with reedbeds, old tree stands, and deadwood, supporting a high diversity of breeding and migratory birds, bats, amphibians, and insects. Its conservation importance is recognized at European level. The Speyerer Auwald forms part of the EU Birds Directive site DE 6716-402 "Berghäuser und Lingenfelder Altrhein" and the FFH site DE 6716-301 "Rheinniederung Germersheim-Speyer". The 1977 protection of the Goldgrube as a protected landscape element and the 1987 designation of around 100-year-old oaks as protected landscape components underline the long-standing local commitment to preserving this Rhine floodplain ecosystem.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
