Springendal & Dal van de Mosbeek

Springendal & Dal van de Mosbeek is a Dutch Natura 2000 protected area in the province of Overijssel, in the eastern Twente region near the German border. It lies on the push moraine of Ootmarsum, a ridge formed during the last ice age that creates a landscape of small valleys carved by meltwater brooks and surrounded by gentle hills. Within roughly twelve square kilometers the area combines the typical small-scale Twente cultural landscape with a striking diversity of natural habitats, including spring-fed forests, wet and dry heathlands, juniper scrub, and species-rich grasslands. The character of the reserve is shaped by the unusual geology beneath the surface. Layers of boulder clay and glauconite-rich deposits feed numerous springs that emerge throughout the valleys, creating a network of small brooks such as the Springendalse Beek, the Mosbeek, and the Hazelbekke. These spring systems support wet, base-rich vegetation types that are rare in the Netherlands, including calcareous mires, quaking bogs, and ash-elm spring forests. Together with surrounding heathlands, wood banks, and old deciduous forests, the area offers an unusually complete picture of the traditional Twente landscape in a relatively compact setting. Ecologically, Springendal & Dal van de Mosbeek stands out as a stronghold for habitat types that have become scarce elsewhere in the country. It is one of the few places in the Netherlands with a well-developed spring mire dominated by species such as moosehead and grass-of-Parnassus, and it is the only place in Twente where the stag beetle still occurs. The reserve is also important for several woodland birds, reptiles including the sand lizard and slow worm, and a variety of specialized stream-dependent plants and invertebrates.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
