Tufière de Rolampont

The Tufière de Rolampont is a classified natural site in the Haute-Marne department of northeastern France, located near the village of Rolampont, about 11 kilometers north of Langres. It is one of the most substantial formations of tufa, or travertine, in eastern France, built up over millennia by calcareous spring water depositing mineral layers over mosses and other vegetation along the Vaubrien stream. What makes the site distinctive is that it remains an active, living geological and biological system. Visitors can observe the tufa-building process in real time, where calcium-rich water flows through moss colonies and gradually encases them in stone, while nearby fossilized tufa formations show the end result of the same process, stable enough to have been quarried historically as a building material. The surrounding limestone landscape of the Champagne plateau is particularly favorable to this kind of phenomenon, and several similar formations occur throughout the region. Beyond its geological interest, the Tufière de Rolampont also serves as an open-air laboratory for fragile calcareous wetland habitats. The site has been recognized through successive layers of environmental protection and is appreciated both for the educational experience it offers and for its value as a quiet destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts.
