Sable River Migratory Bird Sanctuary

The Sable River Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a small protected area on the Atlantic coast of southwestern Nova Scotia, Canada. Established in 1941 and administered by the Canadian Wildlife Service, it lies within the estuary of the Sable River, roughly 35 kilometers southwest of the town of Liverpool. About 90 percent of the sanctuary's surface consists of open estuarine water, with salt marshes making up most of the remaining land area. The sanctuary exists primarily to provide secure resting and feeding habitat for migratory waterfowl. It forms part of the Important Bird Area known as South Shore (Port Joli sector) and operates in close ecological connection with two neighboring bird sanctuaries at Port Hebert and Port Joli. Together, these reserves host thousands of Canada Geese each year and offer refuge to other duck species during the colder months. Although very small in area, the sanctuary's importance lies in its calm, sheltered estuarine waters and the network of nearby protected sites that together support a coastal waterfowl system of regional value. During winter freezes, the Sable River estuary often remains ice-free, providing a critical fallback habitat for waterfowl concentrated along Nova Scotia's South Shore.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
