Upper Rousay Lake Migratory Bird Sanctuary

The Upper Rousay Lake Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a small, federally protected wetland reserve in the Aspen Parkland ecoregion of eastern Saskatchewan, Canada. Established on November 3, 1948, it lies roughly six kilometers west-southwest of Yorkton and forms part of a broader wetland complex of shallow, interconnected waters, sedge meadows, bays, peninsulas, and both temporary and artificially created islands. The sanctuary is most valued for its role as a breeding and molting ground for waterfowl, and as a resting and feeding stopover during the fall migration. The reserve's defining feature is Upper Rousay Lake itself, a shallow basin averaging only about half a meter in depth. Roughly 55 percent of the protected area consists of open water, with the remainder made up of sedge meadows. The landscape was shaped in part by habitat management carried out by Ducks Unlimited Canada, which constructed a number of artificial islands to improve nesting conditions for waterbirds. Together with the adjacent Lower Rousay Lake, which lies outside the sanctuary boundary, the area forms one of the more important prairie wetland complexes for migratory birds in this part of Saskatchewan. The sanctuary is administered by the Canadian Wildlife Service and is classified as an IUCN Category IV protected area, recognizing its primary purpose as habitat and species management rather than strict wilderness preservation. It sits within a long-running federal system of migratory bird sanctuaries that together protect critical stopover and breeding habitat across Canada's flyways.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
