South Africa's third-largest national park protecting the Big Seven and diverse semi-desert ecosystems near Gqeberha
Addo Elephant National Park
Addo Elephant National Park is a premier wildlife conservation area located in South Africa's Eastern Cape province, situated near the city of Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth). Established in 1931, the park covers approximately 1,640 square kilometers of diverse terrain and ranks as the third-largest national park in South Africa after Kruger National Park and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The park's origins trace to a period when local elephant populations were nearly driven to extinction due to conflict with fruit farmers, prompting government intervention to establish a sanctuary that would protect the remaining animals and preserve this unique ecosystem for future generations. Today, Addo encompasses not only the original elephant sanctuary but also the Woody Cape Nature Reserve and significant marine protected areas along the Algoa Bay coast. The park is uniquely notable for being the only conservation area in Africa where visitors can observe all seven of Africa's most iconic megafauna species, known collectively as the Big Seven, within their natural habitats.
