Área de Allariz
The Área de Allariz is a biosphere reserve in the interior of Galicia, in northwestern Spain. It lies in the province of Ourense and spreads across the municipalities of Allariz, A Bola, Vilar de Santos, and Rairiz de Veiga. Designated on 29 June 2005, the reserve reflects more than two decades of coordinated local efforts to link environmental protection with sustainable rural development. The landscape is defined by a broad, flat-floored tectonic depression drained by the River Limia and bordered by low mountains, including the granitic Allariz massif cut by the River Arnoya. Altitudes range roughly from 425 to 927 meters, producing a transitional zone where Atlantic and Mediterranean influences meet. This ecological frontier gives the reserve unusually rich habitats, including broadleaf forests, meadows, streams, and wetlands such as the historically important Antela Lagoon area. The biosphere reserve is known for its mosaic of well-preserved natural areas, cultural heritage, and a small population deeply engaged in sustainable land management. It combines core protected zones, buffer areas, and a large transition zone where traditional rural life, livestock farming, and ecological recovery continue side by side.
