Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park

The Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park is the only national park in the province of Pontevedra and the thirteenth established in Spain. Located in the autonomous community of Galicia along the country's northwestern Atlantic coast, the park encompasses four distinct archipelagos—Cíes, Ons, Sálvora, and Cortegada—distributed across the Rías Baixas estuarine system. The park protects a combined terrestrial and marine area of approximately 8,480 hectares, making it a unique sea-land protected area where oceanic and island ecosystems interlock. Established on July 1, 2002, the park was later designated as a Ramsar Wetland site in 2021, recognizing its international importance as a coastal and marine protected area. The islands support remarkable biodiversity, including one of Europe's largest bay laurel forests on Cortegada, significant seabird colonies, and over twenty-seven species of cetaceans in surrounding waters.
