Barra Honda National Park

Barra Honda National Park is a protected area in northwestern Costa Rica, established in 1974 to preserve one of the country's most remarkable underground cave systems. Located within the Tempisque Conservation Area roughly 12 kilometers from the Tempisque River, the park centers around Barra Honda Peak, a limestone formation that rose from ancient Miocene-era islets millions of years ago. The park encompasses approximately 23 square kilometers of karst landscape characterized by sinkholes, caverns, and underground passages that have been carved over tens of millions of years by water filtering through soluble limestone. This geological wonderland remains only partially explored, with an estimated 42 caves discovered to date, making it one of Central America's most significant cave systems. The park's unique underground environment supports rare, sightless species that have evolved in complete darkness, while its surface features dry tropical forest that contrasts sharply with the mysterious world beneath.
