Black Hill Conservation Park

Black Hill Conservation Park is a protected area in the Mount Lofty Ranges of South Australia, sitting roughly 10 kilometres northeast of central Adelaide and bordering the suburbs of Athelstone and Montacute. Drawn into formal protection in the early 1970s, it covers around 7.58 square kilometres of ridge, valley, and creek-line country, with Black Hill Summit reaching 467 metres above the surrounding terrain. The park takes its name from the dark foliage of the she-oaks (Allocasuarina species) that dominate much of its hillside vegetation. It sits next to Morialta Conservation Park, sharing flora, geology, and climate with that neighbour, so together they form a sizeable continuous block of conserved bushland on Adelaide's doorstep. For Adelaide residents, the park's appeal lies as much in its accessibility as in its scenery. A network of walking tracks stitches together the high points and valleys, and the reserve hosts sections of the long-distance Yurrebilla Trail and Heysen Trail, making Black Hill both a local escape and a waypoint on larger journeys through the Mount Lofty Ranges.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
